Columbus man killed on I-85 in E. Alabama

AUBURN, AL - A male driver that was involved in a two vehicle accident on Tuesday in Auburn at the 52 mile marker on Interstate 85 was 56-year-old Robert Williams Jr., of Columbus, Georgia.

Williams was the driver of a Ford van that collided with a Nissan Altima and went into the median overturning several times.

Williams was wearing a seatbelt but was partially ejected from the vehicle.

He went into trauma arrest before he could be airlifted by helicopter and had to be rushed by ambulance to the East Alabama Medical Center emergency room where he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival from multiple blunt force trauma at 5:46 PM.

The driver of the Altima and a passenger in Williams's vehicle were transported by EAMC EMS to the emergency room for treatment of non life threatening injuries.

Alcohol is not suspected to be a factor in the accident which happened around 5:00 PM Tuesday.

The cause of the accident is still under investigation by the Auburn Police Department and the Lee County Coroner's Office.
