How We Began

The John B. Amos Cancer Center is the vision of the legendary founder and CEO of Aflac, who imagined a state-of-the-art cancer center in his adopted hometown of Columbus, Georgia.

In the late 1980s, Mr. Amos was diagnosed with lung cancer. His own battle with the disease necessitated frequent out-of-town trips as he sought the best care in the world, which he was keenly aware was not a financial option for many in Columbus. And, as most do, he wanted his family close by during his fight against the disease.

Shortly after his diagnosis, The Medical Center asked him to chair "The Next Step . . . Together" capital campaign, which led to the establishment of the John B. Amos Cancer Center in 1990. It was housed in The Medical Center and consolidated cancer services in the hospital into a single unified service.

Mr. Amos lost his four-year battle with cancer in August 1990 at the age of 66, but in the years since his death, the Cancer Center has grown dramatically. The John B. Amos Cancer Center moved to its new home at the entrance to the Columbus Regional Healthcare System campus at Veterans Parkway and 19th street in January 2005. The beautiful, three-story, 49,620-square foot facility is the next phase in continuing the tradition of exceptional cancer care, taking Mr. Amos' dream to the next level.

Mr. Amos would no doubt be thrilled to see the current John B. Amos Cancer Center, and know that patients and their families no longer have to travel far from home to receive high-quality cancer care. His message was to expand our individual horizons and keep living no matter what, just as he did. And, his legacy to the medical community lives on at the John B. Amos Cancer Center.
