COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) – An accident claims the life of a Fort Benning soldier.

The two-vehicle collision occurred around 7:30 a.m. Tuesday on I-185 northbound near Victory Drive just before the St. Mary's Road exit.

Coroner Bill Thrower says 25-year-old Justin Charles Jay of Michigan died from severe multiple blunt force trauma.

Lieutenant Mark D. Starling told News Leader 9 the soldier lost control of his motorcycle and ran underneath an 18-wheeler.

According to Lt. Starling, witnesses say he was swerving from lane to lane. Allegedly, as he drove into the construction zone, he struck a retainer wall before losing control of the motorcycle.

Jay was a Staff Sergeant with the 197 Infantry Regiment on Fort Benning.

News Leader 9 is following this story. We'll have the latest as soon as it becomes available.
