PHENIX CITY, AL (WTVM) - It's a story that has some in Phenix City in an uproar. Phenix City Council voted to remove School Board President Frankie Horace after he refused to have a sit down meeting with the mayor. Now the school board refuses to accept that decision.
The Phenix City School Board has a regularly scheduled meeting for six o'clock Tuesday night. The question is, will former President Frankie Horace be leading that meeting? City council says no, but the school board says yes.
Let's look back to last week to see where this indecision started. On Tuesday September 21st the Phenix City Council unanimously voted to remove School Board President Frankie Horace from his position.
Fast forward to Tuesday September 28th to a scheduled school board meeting, where members say Horace will act as president, despite council's vote.
Looking forward to Wednesday September 29th, that's the Mayor's planned meeting that started this whole dispute.
Phenix City Mayor Sonny Coulter says if the school board allows Horace to act as president, it will be a blatant disregard for his authority, but the school board maintains it was unlawful for council to remove him from his position in the first place, and they do not plan on replacing him.
Attorneys with both the school board and the city council are currently looking into the legality of the decision and whether council's decision to remove Frankie Horace will stand.
Mayor Coulter says his planned meeting with the school board members will still be held Wednesday evening. Of course News Leader Nine will be in attendance so we can bring you the latest.
