Columbus man shot for not having cigarettes

COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) - A man is recovering after being shot around 2:00 Thursday morning.

It happened at the BTW apartments on Veterans Parkway in Columbus.  When police arrived on the scene they found one person with a gunshot wound to the torso.

According to police, the victim was sitting inside his car when two men in an unknown car drove up and started 'shooting the breeze' with the man.  

That's when a suspect pulled a gun on the man after the victim told the driver he did not have any cigarettes. 

The victim ran through the complex, the gunman chased him before shooting the man in the torso.

The bullet exited the man's back. He was taken to Columbus Regional Medical Center for treatment and his wound does not appear to be life threatening.

Police say the motive appears to be robbery and so far no suspects have been arrested.
