LEE COUNTY, AL (WTVM)  - Lee County sheriff deputies say a man is behind bars for allegedly shooting his ex-girlfriend in the face.

Twenty-eight-year-old Cedrick Dawkins of Tuskegee, has been charged with one count of attempted murder following an incident that occurred on September 25 at a home located in the 900 block of Lee road 61 in Auburn.

The victim was treated for her injuries and later released from the East Alabama Hospital.

Authorities say they later found Dawkins in the 1800 block of Lee Road 61 in Auburn suffering from a self-inflicted gun wound to the mouth.  He was treated at a Birmingham hospital where he was treated, released then turned over to the Lee County Sheriff's Office.

It's believed Dawkins and his ex-girlfriend had gotten into a verbal argument which led to him pulling out a small caliber handgun. Dawkins allegedly shot his ex in face, fled the home and shot himself.

Dawkins is currently being held in the Lee County Detention Facility on a $25,000 bond.
