Student arrested after he allegedly brought a gun to school

STEWART COUNTY, GA  (WTVM) –  Authorities say they have detained a 12-year-old boy after a gun was found in the lining of his jacket in Lumpkin, GA.

The Lumpkin Police Department says it received the call around 9:30 a.m. Tuesday morning from Stewart County High School about a student carrying a gun.  

Police took the 12-year-old boy into custody after the principal found an unloaded 22-caliber pistol in the lining of his jacket.

The unnamed boy has been charged with carrying a concealed weapon on school grounds and possession of a firearm by a minor.

It is unknown at this time how the boy got the gun and why he brought it to school.

Authorities tell us when asked why he brought the gun to school the boy told them he forgot the gun was in his jacket.

We are told,  a student spotted the gun on the boy that morning and told a teacher, then the teacher notified the principal, who then searched the boy.

Stewart County middle and high school students attend a combined high school.
