COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) -  Thousands of students across Georgia took part in the 13th annual "Walk to School Day" and some local schools even participated.

The majority of Muscogee County students ride the bus or are dropped off that school by parents, but Wednesday many of them hit the road on foot.

Students at Clubview, Davis, Hannan, Rigdon and Wynnton Elementary schools in Columbus took part in the international "Walk to School Day". Parents, teachers and other volunteers all helped the kids walk safely to school this morning.

Vincent Ellison walked his daughter to school. He told News Leader Nine, "They had the walk today with the kids and it was a blessing for me to get here and walk with them."

"This helps the children and encourages them to live in a healthy lifestyle by walking to and from school," explained Ann Robison, the principal of Hannan Academy.

The event teaches kids about safe walking and biking routes, encourages physical exercise and shows children how to kick start a more healthy way of life. It was a big celebration at some schools, with marching bands, and a mini-parade with banners.
