LUVERNE, AL. (WSFA) - Volunteer Firefighters were in for a surprise on Saturday night when a call about a routine brush fire turned out to be a fully engulfed chicken house.
Luverne firefighters arrived on the scene to a situation quickly getting out of hand. A tanker and crews from six additional volunteer fire departments had to be called in to keep the fire from spreading to a second chicken house.
Crews from Glenwood, Goshen, Northeast Crenshaw, Fullers Crossroads, Rutledge, and Brantley as well as from the Luverne Volunteer Fire Department battled the blaze for nearly three hours.
The building which served as an egg processing facility and housed roughly 5,000 chickens was a complete loss.
At this time the cause of the fire is under investigation, however the building had been having electrical breaker problems.
