Alleged purse snatcher pleads not guilty

COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) -  A Columbus man pleaded not guilty for allegedly snatching a woman's purse and punching her in the face.

The incident happened Tuesday in the 2500 block of 10th Street.

Columbus Police say Frederick Shavers grabbed the woman's purse, punched her in the eyebrow, knocked her to the ground and took off running.

The  woman's boyfriend heard her scream, ran outside and chased Shavers down. He was able to hold him down until police came and arrested him.

Thursday afternoon, Shavers pleaded not guilty to charges of robbery, battery, and obstruction of an officer.

Shavers is behind bars in the Muscogee County Jail with a $12,000 bond and his case has been bound over to Superior Court.
