COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) -  A Columbus woman is still in intensive care after police say she was beaten with a hammer.

Authorities arrested 29-year-old Brian McGhee and charged him with Aggravated Battery.

The 24-year-old victim was taken to the Medical Center just before 4:30 Sunday morning with what officers say were life threatening head injuries.

Officers were called to the intersection of Lawyers Lane and 9th Street and found the woman with multiple severe head wounds in a street near her home.

Reports indicate the weapon was a hammer.

McGhee pleaded not guilty in Columbus Recorder's Court Tuesday.

His hearing has been continued indefinitely until the victim can testify.

Detectives say she is still being treated at the Medical Center and has lost her left eye. They told the judge her face is permanently disfigured.

The judge did not set a bond for McGhee because there was no testimony.

He remains in the Muscogee County Jail.

The victim's family had no comment coming out of court.
