Police investigate afternoon shooting in south Columbus

COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) -Columbus police were called to a home on Knox Street just after 3 this afternoon. They had gotten word that a suspect, 19 year old Michael Sweet was there.Police had special interest in sweet because of his outstanding arrest warrants.

After police arrived on the scene they saw sweet in the back yard -they say he was holding a sawed off shotgun near his throat area.

"Me and my son had been sitting on the porch all day and bout time I went in the house to fix me something to eat and came back our whole street was tow up with cars ambulance and everything," a resident said.

Police say sweet started waving the shotgun around and pointed it towards officers, when officers took cover, Sweet ran away.

As police searched the area for him, they heard a gunshot coming from nearby Blan Street. Moments later, they found Sweet in the store-room of an abandoned house with a gunshot wound. Sweet had taken his own life.

"I feel sorry for the parents what he been through, I think he been through a lot in his life, and it's sad for a guy to just take his life away like that so fast at a young age," Milton said.
