COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) -Paula Watley has been riding horses like seven year old Cow Boy, since she was six years old.
"It's my fourth time so I've been working for mason and Mary Lou for four seasons now," Watley said.
Now in its 26th year, the steeple chase at Callaway gardens has given people in the community a chance to watch talented individuals like Paula Watley race thoroughbred horses at high speeds. It's all part of a vision started by race chairman Mason Lampton. Lampton combined his love of horses with his love for the arts to raise money.
"We all work together and from summer on, really worked hard to pull it all together," race director Kate McGrory said.
This year's race director Kate McGrory is an artist herself. McGrory's love for horses and passion for the arts is what fueled her to lead a dedicated team to put on today's steeplechase without a hitch.
"We hope that everyone has a great day, have more fun than they've ever had before and that's all we can hope for," McGrory said.
A day that spectators and steeplechase participants like Paula Watley can enjoy.
"It's exciting as long as your horse behaves," Watley said.
