CLEVELAND, OH (WOIO) - An Alabama man wanted for rape and murder has been arrested in Cleveland.

According to police, Ellis Patton raped and then strangled his former girlfriend at an apartment complex in Tuscaloosa. The 30-year-old then raped the victim's roommate and forced the roommate's young daughter to stay in the room and watch.

After the despicable crimes, Patton went on the run. Police tracked him to Daytona Beach, Florida, but the trail soon went cold.

Patton hitched a ride with a friend to Cleveland and was getting ready to board a Greyhound bus when he saw a Cleveland State University cop working on an accident scene. Patton approached the cop and surrendered.

Captain Lloyd Baker of the Tuscaloosa Metro Homicide Unit tells 19 Action News they will begin the process of bringing Patton back to Tuscaloosa right away.

Baker also said it was the man driving the car Patton was in who told CSU Police that Patton was wanted for murder in Alabama.
