COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) -  Columbus residents can expect their water bills to be a little higher in January.

In a public hearing at Tuesday's city council meeting, Columbus Water Works President Bob Tant revealed the monthly bill for the average household will be increasing $1.85 per month at the start of the new year.

Tant says several things contributed to the hike, like shortfalls in revenue, increase in operating costs and a declining consumption due to mandatory restrictions on outdoor watering.

Residents who qualify can apply for the Affordability Program provided in conjunction with the city's low income garbage collection adjustment.
