PHENIX CITY, AL (WTVM) - The pieces of the car remain in the roadway, but a family is left picking up the emotional pieces after losing a young life.
Phenix City Police say this is one of the most violent crash scenes the city has ever seen: a gold Toyota 4-Runner ripped to shreds and only a trail of skid marks remain to tell the story of this deadly crash.
According to what a witness told police, the car was traveling on the wrong side of Riverchase Drive at speeds near 100 miles per hour, when it hit the curb, left the road and crashed into the bridge supports, demolishing the car and claiming the life of the young driver.
23 year old Daniel Blackwell was killed instantly Sunday night at this marker. His friends, who visited the crash site Monday afternoon, tell News Leader Nine he would have turned 24 on Christmas Eve.
Police say there is no indication that another car was involved, but speed was definitely a factor. Russell County Coroner Arthur Sumbry Jr. says Daniel Blackwell's body will be sent for a toxicology test. Those results will not be available for another three months.
The portion of Riverchase Drive under Highway 80 was shut down for hours Sunday night as crews inspected and cleaned up the scene. The crash remains under investigation by the patrol division of the Phenix City Police Department.
