Facebook makes changes for your own good

PALO ALTO, CA (RNN) - It is already shaping up to be a big week in the tech world. While the blogosphere and news media are abuzz today over the arrest of WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange, it's what happened Monday that has the casual net user in a twitter.

That's right. Facebook redesigned its website again.

With more than 500 million users, that's a lot of feathers to ruffle.

"Whenever they make a change, it upsets me if the change creates a big learning curve," said Facebook user Stuart Lovinggood. "I think it looks a little busy."

If you ask Facebook, though (and in particular, founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg, who on Sunday appeared on the CBS show "60 Minutes" to sell the redesign), the new format was for the good of the user.

"You can see all the things you have in common with [your friends]," Zuckerberg said. "It gives us this amazing connection with that person in a way that the current version of the profile that we have today just doesn't do."

So what is all the fuss about?

Essentially, Facebook decided that you need basic information about your friends to be a little higher on their profile page and displayed a little more prominently. The redesign includes a row of updating photos that the user has recently been "tagged" in.

The changes give your friends an instant glimpse of your life story - at least the one that you post on the social network.

Now, your name, current position and profession, education, current town, relationship, home town and birthday are located conveniently at the top of each profile page.

Another addition is "the friendship page."

Now, when you go to your friends' profile pages, you will see a link to your "friendship page," a page devoted to the history of your relationship with your Facebook friends.

Creepy? Maybe. But the folks at Facebook said the changes are based on the feedback they heard from you, the Facebook user.

"We always try to incorporate that feedback into every change we make while still moving our product forward," a spokesperson for Facebook said Monday.

The changes will make it to every Facebook user by early next year.
