Volunteers recognize fallen heroes

Fort Mitchell, AL (WTVM) It started here at Fort Mitchell national cemetery just five years ago. Since then the Wreath's Across America event has attracted a number of volunteers to come out each year and place wreaths at the grave-sites of fallen American heroes.

 And today wasn't any different.

"When I saw it thorough the united way news letter I was interested in coming out to support the cause," Christie Thompson said.

It's a cause that hits home for volunteer Christie Thompson.

"I have a sister-in-law that died young that's buried out here, and I also have my grandfather out here and so personally that holds a place in my heart so I like coming out here because I feel like it honors them," Thompson said.

It also honors hundreds of other fallen soldiers that served in the United States armed forces. Members of Fort Benning's O-C-S 3-11th Infantry regiment were on hand today, helping out with the services.

"Being a part of this is a great honor especially to honor those that have paved the way for us," Daniel Hanks said.

Fort Mitchell Wreaths Across America service leader Major Christopher Tate says that today is all about honoring our fallen heroes.

"The mission of the wreaths across America event is quite simple, it's to remember the fallen and to honor those who have served and who are currently serving and to teach our children the value of freed and about the sacrifices that have been made for all of us today," Major Tate said.

After a brief ceremony, wreaths were laid on the grave site at Fort Mitchell. Volunteer Christie Thompson says that this is something that fallen veterans across the country truly deserve.

"The veterans they are important to us they've serve our country, and that's why we are where we are and why we are free," Thompson said.
