Columbus Airport on the upswing

COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM)- Kayla Barret frequently flies out of the Columbus Airport.

"It's a lot more convenient to come straight here to Columbus then go to Atlanta and drive an hour and half south," Barret said.

She lives in downtown Dallas Texas and chooses the nonstop flight offered by American Airlines to fly to Columbus to visit her husband who is stationed at Fort Benning.

Airport officials say it's because of people like Barrett that the Columbus Airport is on the upswing.

"American has stimulated a market and so we are getting additional traffic from American and delta is also increasing because of sort of the snow ball effect with American," Mark Oropeza.

Airport director Mark Oropeza says that since July airport traffic has been up 40 percent. Oropeza sites convenience as one of the main reasons.

"The neat thing is at this airport you don't have the hassles that you have at what are called the big airports you are still going to have to go through security but its 10 min, instead of an hour and 10 minutes," Oropeza said.

"I can show up here about 45 minutes before my flight I usually just have a carry on and basically walk right in they have some chairs out here and they basically just call for the flight whenever they are ready," Barrett said.

Oropeza says that the holiday season is expected be even busier.

"Keep booking folks if you are going to go somewhere then you need to book right now because the flights are filling up,' Mark Oropeza said.

He also tells us that this is only the beginning for the Columbus airport.

"Our next target is U.S. Airways, we're in talks with U.S. airways right now, no date has been set, no getting excited there not coming tomorrow but we've got their attention and we think they will be a great fit for Columbus," Oropeza said.
