"Toys for Tots" brings community together

COLUMBUS (WTVM-TV)- There is nothing that will put you in the holiday spirit like a child's smiling face.

The folks at Headquarter Nissan and Columbus Fire and Emergency Medical Services are teaming up to help kids less fortunate do just that.

"Our purpose is to make sure that this Christmas and this holiday is a good month for little kids despite the rainy weather today people came out to drop off toys," Shawn Esfahani said.

With each toy that is dropped off you get a free "Christmas in Dixie" CD autographed by lead guitarist of the country music group "Alabama," Jeff Cook.

"I think it's a great idea, you know there's Christmas and as long as you've got love, you have to make sure the kids have something to play with," Cook said.

Columbus fire officials even had some grown-up toys for kids to enjoy.  One of the highlights was a 75 year old Columbus fire truck and a sporty drag racer.

"We always participate with the kids and I wanted to show off the car, they think it's a little toy but it's a real car," Jerry Blunt said.

Throughout the day the beds of showroom trucks were filled with more than 50 toys. Owner of Headquarter Nissan Shawn Esfahani tells us that today's event is about bringing the community together for children in need.

"We're all of a community that we need to reach out to each other and make sure that this part of the year, the holiday season, a Christmas is one that is joyous for everybody," Esfahani said.

"I love seeing the backs of these truck beds filled up and under the Christmas tree people are still coming even though the weather is a little adverse today and I think it's going to be a success," Jeff Cook said.
