Vases stolen from AL cemetery for salvage

DORA, Ala. (AP) - The manager of a funeral home in Dora says thieves have been stealing vases from graves, apparently looking to sell them for scrap.

Buddy Sparkman, manager of New Horizon Funeral Home, says more than 25 decorative vases have been stolen from graves in the New Horizon Memorial Gardens in recent weeks. Sparkman says some of the vases have been found at an area scrap yard.

Sparkman says the vases are made of bronze, which contains some copper, and will fetch $7 each at most salvage yards. He says it costs New Horizon at least $50 to replace them, and the replacement vases are made of zinc.

The funeral home is in Jefferson County, just outside Walker County.
