Phenix City, AL (WTVM)- The Danford's Christmas gift to their three boys, a 12-week-old puppy, was trapped in a storm drain in their back yard.
"I just felt helpless, I felt horrible for him because you literally could just here him whining and whimpering we couldn't see'em because of where he was and all we could do was hear him crying," Mary Danford said.
Mary Danford says that her husband called her just after 1:00 on Saturday afternoon, telling her that their dog Bengie was trapped in the drain and water was quickly pouring into it. They then called Phenix City police and an officer came to their home.
"She advised my husband that her sergeant had informed her that they were not going to dispatch Phenix City animal control to come out and get our dog out, that we would need to find some other means to get our puppy out of the storm sewer drain that belongs to the city," Danford said.
Luckily Danford was able to get in touch with the Russell county sheriff's office. They quickly dispatched their animal control unit to rescue Bengi.
"We contacted Heath and within 10 minutes had two guys helping to get our puppy out," Danford said.
Danford says that in about 15 minutes Bengi was freed from the drain. She's hoping that the drain can be fixed so that something like this never happens again.
"If our dog can fall into it, it somewhat scares me that our child, could get into it, we do have three young children here," Bengi said.
With the help of the Russell county animal control Bengie was safely removed form the drain. Mary Danford says he could have been helped sooner had the city responded.
"I just hope maybe they will start helping and covering their area instead of sending people from the county to do it," Mary Danford said.
