MIDLAND, GA (WTVM) - Muscogee County will see an influx in population in the coming years and developers in the Midland are already getting a head start on the plans.
When developers discuss growth on Macon Road, they aren't talking about the MidTown area… head further to the east into Midland where more homes and businesses will soon be popping up.
Terry Gumbert has lived in Midland for 24 years and with plans for new homes, businesses and roads, property in the area is starting to look more like a construction site, "The people impacted the most will be those in the Garrett Creek/Lynch Road area and traffic is their main concern because it's a nightmare already. That was their biggest concern on the project."
"The growth in the area itself, we know it's coming, that's a growth corridor for the most part. At some time we know growth is coming, we're trying to preserve as much of the rural or country setting as we can," explained Rick Jones with Columbus's Planning Department.
Jones told News Leader Nine Woodruff Realty and Thayer Properties both have projects in the works off Macon Road, including the upcoming "Midland Downs" subdivision, "They are going to develop single family and multi-family homes and there will be a little commercial."
Some developers are even discussing an apartment complex, which makes some area residents, like Gumbert upset, "I would support it 100 percent if I weren't nagged by the concept of an apartment complex."
But Rick Jones maintains more people are coming and planning ahead is the best step to take, "We expect a lot of growth to happen out there, particularly around the inter-change. We want to make sure we have it planned out."
The official plans for "Midland Downs" will be presented to Columbus City Council later in January, and if everything goes as planned, residents can expect to see construction kick off in the spring or summer.
