Homeless Shelters at full capacity

By Laura Ann Sills - bioemail

COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) - The Valley Rescue Mission's 80 bed Homeless Shelter has been full for the last few days.  Temperatures dipping to the 'teens' has more people seeking shelter.

Glen Monroe has spent the last few nights at the Valley Rescue Mission.  He is on the list at many shelters, but tells News Leader Nine all are full.  "I have a 10 year old son named Jarred and I had to send him to Iowa because we are falling on hard times and there is no shelter that could take me and my son."

The Valley Rescue Mission does not want to turn people away, but they have had to because the need has been so great. Still, the organization tries not to leave them empty handed.

Development Director Joshua McQuien urges people in the valley to donate new or used coats and blankets that will be put in the right hands. "Anything you would think you would use to stay warm outside... gloves, scarves, toboggans," describes McQuien.

Donations can be brought to the Valley Rescue Mission at 2903 Second Avenue in Columbus.  Or, you can call (706) 322-8267.  Click here for more information about the organization.
