Judge to Ala funeral director: Repay money

ANNISTON, AL (AP) - A judge says a funeral director has a month to begin repaying a Calhoun County woman who claims the mortician cheated her out of almost $20,000 by overcharging for her son's funeral.

Jeffery Williams will face up to a year in jail if the money doesn't start coming by February.

A judge held a probation hearing for Williams on Wednesday. The Anniston funeral director pleaded guilty to a reduced charge after being accused of cheating a Hobson City woman by overcharging for her son's funeral.

Prosecutors say Williams isn't repaying Mary Whitman and should be sent to jail. He pleaded guilty in November.

But Circuit Judge Malcolm Street agreed with the defense and gave the man until next month to begin repaying the money.
