CRAWFORD COUNTY, GA (WTVM) -  Authorities say a Taylor County man that's been missing for nearly a month is dead. As the search for his body continues, a suspect has been charged with his murder.

Trey Byers, a 22-year-old contractor and father of two, said goodbye to his family at their Taylor County home on his way to a party with two of his friends back on December 18th. That was the last time anyone had seen or heard from him and his mother says there were no indications anything was wrong. She reported him missing on December 21st and several agencies, including the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, joined in the search for Byers.

Now, officials are declaring that Byers was murdered.

According to a press release sent out Thursday by the GBI, 21-year-old Cody Daniel Jackson, from Crawford County, GA, is charged in the case. GBI agents say Jackson is accused of killing Byers after leaving a Fort Valley residence with him in the early morning hours of December 19, 2010. The two were headed to Crawford County in Jackson's pickup truck. The vehicle was found burned off Fair Play Hill Road near the Crawford County Landfill a few hours later. Byers' body has not been located.

Jackson was served with the arrest warrant at the Crawford County Jail where he was already in custody for an unrelated probation violation. No bond has been set on his murder charge.

The arrest is part of an ongoing investigation by the Taylor, Peach, and Crawford County Sheriff's Offices, assisted by agents from the GBI regional offices in Columbus and Perry. Investigators are still gathering information in the attempt to find Byers' remains.

GBI Special Agent in Charge at the Perry GBI Office Gary Rothwell calls Byers and Jackson "acquaintances." Rothwell would not say how Byers was killed, adding that the case is still being investigated. He says police are searching for Byers' body in Crawford County.

Anyone with information about the disappearance is requested to call the Perry GBI Office during business hours at 478-987-4545 or after hours at 1-800- 597-TIPS.
