COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) - Just four days after Synovus slashed 850 positions, there's another big change.

The company announced Synovus Regional CEO and CB&T CEO Steve Melton, will retire.

Melton's been with CB&T for more than 20 years. He'll continue to serve on the Board of Directors.

William R. "Billy" Blanchard will assume both of Melton's roles.  He was already serving as president of CB&T.

"We are pleased that Billy is both ready and willing to expand his role leading the talented CB&T team," said Jimmy Yancey, Chairman of the CB&T Board of Directors. "He is an excellent banker and exceptional leader with a deep love for this community and company, literally sharing in its long history as a third generation executive leader of the bank."

Blanchard started in 1995 as a Management Associate with CB&T. During his 15-year banking career, he has worked as a credit analyst and served as Business Development Officer and Commercial Lender in the Corporate Banking Department.

He also served as Executive Vice President of Retail Banking for CB&T. In October 2009, Blanchard was named President of CB&T.

Earlier this week, Synovus officials announced they were eliminating 850 positions and consolidating some bank branches over a five state area.
