The BCS Trophy in its final leg of Wal-Mart tour

AUBURN, AL (WTVM) -  The BCS National Championship Coaches' Trophy is in the final leg of its local Wal-Mart tour.  The fans were lined up today to get a glimpse at the famous crystal football.

"It looks like a regular football, but it's very breakable, and it's very clear," said Brady Streetman.

Streetman is right.  The crystal football on top of the BCS National Championship Coaches' Trophy is handmade Waterford Crystal from Ireland.  It weighs about forty five pounds from top to bottom.  The football alone weighs roughly eight pounds, and it takes about three months to make.  The trophy is valued at thirty thousand dollars, but its meaning is priceless to Auburn fans.  Waterford Crystal makes a new football every year that sits atop the Coaches' Trophy.  So, the Tigers will have this year's version forever.

"The Coaches' Trophy is kind of like a celebrity especially in the world of college football," said Charley Green.

Green is one of two managers that escorts this piece of football history across the country during the football season and then, brings it home to the winning team.  He said seeing the fans' reactions is one of the best parts of his job.

"Most of these people have never experienced a championship.  So, it's just wonderful for us to see the excitement on people's faces," said Green.

Ben Johnson has been an Auburn fan for about twelve years.  For him, seeing the trophy means sharing part of the experience the players had out on the field in Arizona.

"Knowing that it's going to be in that trophy case from now until the end of time is something real special," said Green

That way, future Auburn Tigers will be able to look back and remember a once in a lifetime experience.
