Bright future ahead of Auburn Engineer students

AUBURN, AL (WTVM) - With everything from wireless to electrical to software engineering, Auburn University students aren't just in the classrooms they're living, breathing and creating technology.

With a higher demand for cell phones, tablets, laptops, wireless, and computer science engineering are some of the most popular careers. There are several courses to create apps, one app created is already being applied across Alabama to teach 3rd and 4th graders about nutrition.

Graduate teacher, Johnathan Lartigue says, "the students want to be on the cutting edge of technology and whether that's the new iPhone, or iPad or HP tablet the students are gonna wanna be involved with working in it."

Students in electrical engineering created an autonomous lawn mower, winning 2nd place in a competition,  that cuts grass without even touching it. Push one button and that's it.

Michael Carroll describes the competition, "You have to edge around a flower bed, cut along a white picket fence and also avoid the obstacle which is a stuffed toy poodle on top of a remote control."

Tom Devall, the director of automotive manufacturing initiatives, says Auburn's goal is not just about students actually creating things, it's about preparing them to walk into any working environment and making it better. "They should be able to walk out to any industry and when they walk in the door spot weakness in manufacturing systems and recommend improvements."

"Opportunities are only limited by their imagination. Who knows who's gonna be the cutting edge application. Ask me in 5 years who will be the new CEO of a major company" said Lartigue.

While auburn may be known for its agricultural background, it also holds strong grounding in the technology world. With innovative classes and productions it's a promise for the future with an Auburn graduate at the head of its class.
