Dead cats found in Barbour County, AL

EUFAULA, AL (WTVM) - There are an estimated 3,900 feral cats in Barbour County, Alabama. That number is growing everyday.

The Pet Assistance League (PAL) has been working since August to trap, neuter, and release as many feral animals in the county as possible.

25 cats have been trapped in the historical district.  They have been transported to a clinic in Dothan, spayed or neutered, and then released on a farm.

PAL volunteers spent Monday night checking out an abandoned home in rural Barbour County.  They estimate up to 50 cats are running wild at the house.  The ladies of PAL came got more than they bargained for, seven dead cats and numerous others very sick.

"Evidentially they have been inbreeding. That means that brothers and sisters are breeding with each other," explained volunteer Aprile Tew.

PAL Volunteer, Jo Vaughn said, "This could be stopped.  The only way to stop it is to spay and neuter their pets."

The four ladies in the group have taken on the challenge of stopping the overpopulation of feral animals in Barbour County. They work off of donations from the community.  They pay for the surgery for the feral animals, the traps, and the gas to transport them.

Many people choose not to spay or neuter their animals because of money.  They found a clinic in Dothan, AL that does the surgery for a fraction of the cost.  After trapping the feral cats, they are transported to the clinic and retrieved the next day.  PAL will transport pets to the clinic as well.

Vaughn said, "We have a waiting list right now with approximately 400 cats waiting to be trapped."

These ladies believe it will always be a constant fight, but the impact of their work will soon be seen.
