PHENIX CITY, AL (WTVM) - Authorities arrested a man Thursday evening following a life-threatening scuffle over beer. Now he is face charges of attempted murder.

Jonathan Johnson, 27, was taken into custody around 7:00 p.m. - without incident.

When Johnson walked into the Heap Cheap store Wednesday morning, the clerk on duty, a 71-year-old veteran, had no idea he would be wrestling Johnson for his own life.

According to the police report, Johnson walked over and attempted to steal a six-pack of Corona. He then went to pay for his other items and leave the store.

Capt. Frank Ivery with the Phenix City Police Department said, "The clerk went out and addresses the defendant who was already outside the store. He brought him back in the store and had him sit in the chair, at which time the police were called."

The clerk locked the doors and told Johnson to stay where the surveillance cameras could see him until Phenix City Police got there.

"While the clerk was awaiting the arrival of the police the subject jumped the clerk and took a weapon from the clerk. The clerk was wearing a weapon on him and attempted to shoot the clerk," Ivery explained.

But the 71-year-old was able to twist the suspects hand so as not to get shot. The bullets hit two cabinets in the store. Then Ivery says Johnson ran away".

Johnson was taken to the Russell County Jail on charges of robbery, attempted murder and theft of property.
