Man in Jamaica admits to scamming local people

HAMILTON, GA (WTVM) - Imagine you received a call saying you had won a huge amount of cash, but the only catch was that you had to send them some cash first.  Most people would think this was a scam.

Harris County deputies say you have reason to be suspicious.  "Anyone calling and soliciting a Western Union payment is probably trying a scam," explained corporal Ryan Williamson.

So far, four people in the last week have called the Harris County Sheriff's Office saying they believe they were part of a scam.

The caller will identify himself as a representative of Global International Sweepstakes and say you have won lots of money from a sweepstakes. In order to claim their prize the victim is told they must wire through Western Union $250-750 to an address.

After several complaints, the investigators tracked the phone number back to Jamaica.

News Leader 9 and corporal Williamson called the scammer back and pretended to be a winner.

Using a false voice and sounding excited about the $4.5 million he was promised the investigator was able to get a lot of information out of the scammer. "Just stay calm and I will help you.  You are a rich lady.  I would like to be a rich lady like you," said the scammer.

After 30 minutes, Williamson explained who he was.  "This is investigator Williamson with the Harris County Sheriff's Office and we know this is a scam.  Stop calling people and running a scam on them."

The scammer's answer might surprise you.  He explained, "I have to scam all these people in America for my family." He went on to ask for $50 to feed his family.  When this did not work, he cussed and hung up.

The moral of the story is to be responsible.  Deputies have no jurisdiction in Jamaica and urge residents to be careful when an unknown person calls or knocks on your door.  You can always call your local law enforcement office to report the suspicious activity.
