OPELIKA, Ala. (AP) - The sentencing for an Iraq war veteran convicted in the abduction and shooting death of an Auburn University freshman has been delayed until March 2.
Court officials say the hearing for 26-year-old Courtney L. Lockhart was set for Jan. 28 but has been moved at the request of the Lee County district attorney's office. In November, a Lee County jury recommended life in prison without the possibility of parole for the 2008 kidnapping and killing of 18-year-old Lauren Burk.
Burk, of Marietta, Ga., was kidnapped the night of March 4, 2008, in a campus parking lot. Lockhart said he drove Burk around town in her car before shooting the student and leaving her to bleed to death along a roadway.
He said he then drove her car to campus and set it on fire.
