COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) -  The Open Door Community House in collaboration with New Horizons Community Services is hosting the "Employment Expo for the Homeless" today from 9:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. In light of the recent recession, organizers said it's a good opportunity for those who are sleeping on the streets or in shelters to get a second chance at life.

"We will have so many employers here and service providers talking with the participants--one on one viewing resumes and conducting interviews onsite," explained David Wallace, New Horizons Residential Services Coordinator.

Wallace added clients already involved in the various programs provided through New Horizons have been prepped for a job interview and have received assistance with resume building.

Last year more than 300 people showed up for the one-day event.  A free lunch is also served at 12:30 p.m.  Columbus Technical College's cosmetology students will be on hand again this year offering free haircuts to participants.

Everyone will be asked to fill out surveys as the agency hopes to collect data in its quest to determine the new trend of homelessness.

"We've seen an upswing in the number of homeless people due to the recession. People who were considered ‘middle class' a few years ago, but lost their jobs are now living on the streets or in shelters. We want to get a real picture of the current situation."

Open Door Community House is located at 2405 Second Avenue.
