COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) -  When law enforcement responded to a car crash Saturday night, they had no idea one of the victims would end up to be one of their own.

A community is mourning the loss of 42-year-old Sumter County Sheriff's Deputy Robert Pierce.

The Muscogee County Coroner explains the crash happened near the intersection of 6th Street and Veterans Parkway Saturday night when a car and a motorcycle collided.

Deputy Robert Pierce, who was driving the motorcycle, was pronounced dead at 8 p.m. at the Columbus Medical Center.

Pierce's body has been sent to the Georgia State Crime Lab for an autopsy.

The Sumter County Sheriff's Office said Pierce served with their department for nearly a year. He previously worked for the Muscogee County Sheriff's Office and is survived by his wife.

No funeral arrangements have been announced at this time.  Anyone who wants to send cards or well wishes to the family can write to:
