Crash kills Sumter County deputy

COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) -  When law enforcement responded to a car crash Saturday night, they had no idea one of the victims would end up to be one of their own.

A community is mourning the loss of 42-year-old Sumter County Sheriff's Deputy Robert Pierce.

The Muscogee County Coroner explains the crash happened near the intersection of 6th Street and Veterans Parkway Saturday night when a car and a motorcycle collided.

Deputy Robert Pierce, who was driving the motorcycle, was pronounced dead at 8 p.m. at the Columbus Medical Center.

Pierce's body has bee sent to the state crime lab for an autopsy.

It is not known at this time if there were any other injuries associated with this crash. 

The Sumter County Sheriff's Office said Pierce has served with their department for nearly two years.

    The baby’s mother used heroin and prescription pain medication during her pregnancy, and the baby was born addicted to drugs, police say.
