PHENIX CITY, AL (WTVM) - Phenix City Mayor Sonny Coulter says the news of City Councilman Arthur Sumbry, Sr. being charged with forgery and perjury completely took him by surprise.

After 25 years of working with him in city government, the mayor can not help but comment on Sumbry's loyalty to the city, "I know how dedicated he is to the city but I know nothing really of his private life, his personal life."

Councilman Sumbry was at Monday's work session, several days after being indicted by the Russell County Grand Jury for acting as a notary public, allegedly forging his signature on legal documents and lying about it in a court of law. "For him to get caught up in a situation like he's caught up in now is really something that I hate to see." Said Mayor Coulter

Mayor Coulter says he currently stands by Councilman Sumbry as these charges are just that; charges, not a guilty verdict. "Mr. Sumbry will continue to serve as a city council member of course, your indictment, but we understand that is an accusation not a conviction."

If Sumbry is convicted of forgery and perjury, his seat as Phenix City councilman will immediately be revoked.
