WASHINGTON (CNN) - NASA has discovered more than 1,200 potential planets beyond our solar system.
Six of those planets were found circling a sun-like star called Kepler.
Scientists say it's the closest planetary system to our own they've found yet.
The discovery is part of a three-and-a-half-year project. The Kepler mission is expected to continue until at least November 2012.
NASA is hoping to find Earth-like planets.
