GOODWATER, AL (WSFA) - A man in court on domestic violence charges "attacked" and "attempted to forcibly obtain a firearm", according to Alabama Bureau of Investigation officials, and was shot by a police officer inside the small town of Goodwater's municipal courthouse. Goodwater, located approximately 60 miles north of Montgomery, has a population of about 1,500 people.

Coosa County Coroner Alan Wingfield said one person is hurt, but not dead. The man, unidentified, was transported to an area hospital and then taken by helicopter to UAB Hospital in Birmingham. His condition was not immediately known.

Witnesses said a person on crutches became belligerent towards the judge around 9:40am. An officer responded, ultimately shooting the man. Witnesses said the officer shot the man a second time once he was on the ground.

A person inside Goodwater Town Hall, which is connected to the municipal courthouse, said they heard two gunshots and saw a man being taken away on a stretcher. The person said people came from next door for paper towels to wipe up blood. The worker, who did not wish to be identified, said authorities were making everyone stay who was inside the courtroom at the time of the shooting.

"WE WANT JUSTICE"

Residents of Goodwater gathered on the scene claiming the shooting was unfair. Shouts of "We want justice" from a crowd was met with State Trooper requests that the citizens remain peaceful.

The Alabama Bureau of Investigation says it will turn over all of its findings to the Coosa County District Attorney's office when the investigation in completed.
