COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM)- Colleen Smith lives in Midland, she moved back here from Atlanta, coming home to several big name restaurants and retailers in her small town back yard.

"There is a Wal-Mart closer and there is more stuff to do and there are a lot more people to meet its fun," Smith said.

And the Super Wal-Mart on Gateway Road looks like just the start of what's to come.

"As the population grows following the additional residents our there you also see retail following to meet the customer's needs," Michael Dunbar said.

Michael Dunbar with the Greater Columbus Chamber of Commerce, says the available space in Midland is very competitive for businesses like Chick-fil-A being built across from Wendy's in the Beaver Run is expected to open in May.

"It's one of those opportunities where they see other businesses locating in that region and you'll see more businesses joining there and growing with them in that area," Dunbar said.

Dunbar sees this growth as a shot in the arm for the city's economy and says it's only the beginning as the Columbus area expands.

"With the growth out there add the growth with Fort Benning's Maneuver Center of excellence that's going to bring even more population into the region," Dunbar said.

Colleen Smith hopes it leads something even bigger.

"Third mall hopefully, we have to go to Bradley Park just to go get Chick-fil-A but hopefully a third mall, I would like more shopping centers," Smith said.
