Ft. Benning influx to end by September

COLUMBUS, Ga. (AP) - The Army commander over the U.S. Army School says its move to Fort Benning should be complete by mid-September.

Brig. Gen. Ted Martin says he's not worried about the influx of new troops and families because there's been plenty of advance planning.

Bringing the Armor School to Georgia from Fort Knox, Ky., is expected to bring about 28,000 soldiers and civilians to the Columbus area. The decision to move the school was made during the last round of military base shifts and closures in 2005.

The changes will make Fort Benning, also home of the Army's Infantry School, the sixth largest Army post in the nation. Martin says more than $2 billion has been spent on new facilities for the soldiers.
