Man brings automatic rifle to school property

COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) –  A Columbus man is facing charges after having a loaded automatic rifle on a local high school campus.

Terrance Williams, 21, was arrested by police just after the Kendrick - Carver basketball game at Kendrick High School on Friday night.

According to Captain J.D. Hawk with the Columbus Police Department, Williams was taken into custody after Columbus police officers found a loaded black and yellow AK-47 automatic rife in the back seat of his car.

According to police, all happen after a fight broke out in the Kendrick High School gym after their basketball team beat Carver High School.

While police were breaking up the fight and escorting people out of the gym, police reports say a woman stopped security and told them that two men said that they had weapons.

Police stopped Williams, who admitted that he did have a gun; he later told investigators that gun was purchased at Shooters gun shop in Columbus.

According to Captain Hawk, they do not believe that the gun was brought inside of the school.

Williams was charged with possession of a dangerous weapon at possession of weapon at a school function.

He posted a $10,000 bond and was released from Muscogee County Jail on Saturday.

Police are still investigating this case but they have yet to find out why this weapon was brought to the school.

They also do not believe that the fight in the school gym was in any connected to the weapon that was found in the car.
