COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) - Jury selection is underway in Columbus in the trial for Tyrone Barnum.
Barnum is facing charges of Aggravated Child Molestation, Aggravated Assault, False Imprisonment and Possession of a Knife During the Commission of a Crime stemming from an alleged attack on a then 8-year-old girl.
His indictments and arrest warrants state Barnum choked the little girl and molested her at knife point, using a steak knife. The documents also indicate he held the victim and other family members in their East Columbus home against their will on the same day as the alleged sexual assault.
In court today, there was some discussion about Barnum's mental evaluations since his arrest and his capacity to stand trial, shedding possible light on why the case has taken so long to go to trial. Now, the court is moving forward.
The trial is underway on the 7th floor of the Columbus Government Center downtown before Chief Muscogee County Superior Court Judge John Allen.
Barnum is being represented by members of the Public Defender's Office.
