Child dies after SUV strikes him near Carver Park

COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) - The tragic death of a toddler sent shockwaves through a Columbus neighborhood.

Late Wednesday afternoon word spread that 2-year-old Christian Bell was struck near the driveway of his home on West Park Court in east Columbus near Carver Park.

Neighbor, Leon David, witnessed some of the chaos said, "I was just coming home from school and the little boy was laying down right there. And the man was just crying. He was just bawling."

The little boy was transported to the Columbus Medical Center where he was pronounced dead by the Muscogee County Coroner at 5:13 p.m.

The person who struck the child, but they did say the person who did it was not a family member.

At this time, no charges have been filed. Police tell us a man, 45, was turning around in a cul-de-sac when the backend of his Chevy Tahoe struck the child.

The body of Christian Bell will be sent to the state crime lab in Atlanta Thursday morning for an autopsy.
