COLUMBUS, GA (WXTX) - Columbus Police are investigating two shootings from over the weekend that are being called accidental but happened in the midst of heated arguments.

The first happened Saturday night at the Links of Maple Ridge Apartments on South Stadium Drive. That's located behind Kinnett Stadium in North Columbus.

Investigators say Carlos Williams, 27, was arguing with his wife who is a sergeant stationed at Fort Benning. Williams went to pull a pistol out of his hooded sweatshirt when the gun suddenly fired, hitting him in the stomach. The bullet came out his buttocks.

Lieutenant Ronnie Hastings with the Columbus Police Department's Robbery, Assault and Homicide Division says Williams' gun, a revolver, was stolen in a 2008 residential burglary in Athens-Clarke County, Georgia. The home belonged to an Assistant District Attorney. Hastings says Williams used to live there but Williams claims he found his gun in his backyard in Columbus. He also tells officers he wasn't going to shoot his wife.

Williams is still in the hospital but once he's released, he'll be charged with Theft by Receiving Stolen Property and Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon.

Columbus detectives believe he served a four year sentence for Criminal Attempt Homicide.

The second shooting also happened in North Columbus Saturday night, around 10:30.

Police say Samuel Cole Sr., 51, was being driven to the Medical Center by his son, 31-year-old Samuel Cole Jr.

According to investigators, the elder Cole has served from mental problems for years and his son was taking him to the hospital for treatment.

Samuel Cole Jr. tells WTVM he found his father disoriented and hiding in the bushes of a friend's house earlier that night. On the way to the Medical Center, his dad was irate and he pulled into the parking lot of the Microtel Hotel off Williams Road to calm him down.

Cole says he opened the passenger door to let his dad out and a gun fell out on the ground. He pulled his father to the ground and when his dad said "I'm going to shoot you in the gut," he says another gun in his father's front pocket went off. The bullet grazed his dad's leg.

Samuel Cole Jr. told police he wants the case prosecuted. His dad is charged with aggravated assault.

The younger Cole says his father is being held in a Medical Facility in the Muscogee County Jail.
