School Board President reflects on Obama's Proposal, Education Cuts

COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) -  President Obama spoke Monday about his 2012 Budget Proposal, in it, The President seeks to cut many federal programs, but one is he is trying to spare is education.

President Obama said the children of our country should be able to compete with other countries academically. "If we're gonna walk the walk when it comes to fiscal discipline these kinds of things will be necessary."

Cathy Williams hopes it's more than just talking the talk.  As President of the Muscogee County School Board, she's admits being a little worried.

"I pray every night that our leaders at that level are smart enough to know that these cuts are the correct cuts because this whole community is in a recession."

She hopes those in power recognize students should never suffer, even in a down economy.

"Look at the children, look at the future, understand that these children that are sitting in the seats today are gonna be the leaders of tomorrow, we need to make sure they're well equipped."

Obama has proposed cutting airport costs, heating services for the poor, and other cuts to try to spare education, "he seems to be doing the cuts in a very surgical fashion, he's cutting very specific programs, very specific reasons."

The President said he wants to boost target spending in education funds, meaning money strategically going where it is needed.  Williams says the targeted approach is crucial.

"Public education is critical to the future of our country it's about economic development it's about people re-locating, it's about everything."
