Obama to hold a news conference today

WASHINGTON (AP) - President Barack Obama will hold a news conference at the White House Tuesday.

His plans were announced a day after Obama unveiled a 2012 budget that would freeze or reduce some safety-net programs for America's poor. Republicans are demanding more drastic cuts to shrink the government to where it was before he took office.

With the economic recovery still on shaky ground, Obama is looking to promote an agenda to create jobs in the short term and increase U.S. competitiveness in the future. But his domestic policies have been overshadowed in recent weeks by events in Egypt, where protesters forced the resignation of longtime President Hosni Mubarak. The question and answer session was scheduled for late morning.
