500,000 bassinets recalled following several reports of collapses

COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) - Lesley Meeks knows first-hand what can happen when a bassinet malfunctions.  "She was asleep when it actually fell through.  The bottom of it came apart and I flipped," said Meeks which involved an older model bassinet.

Her baby was unharmed, but Meeks is expecting another child now.  We asked whether a bassinet is on the new baby's shopping list.  "I refused to buy another one."

Meeks' friend who is also expecting wasn't surprised to learn about the 500,000 bassinet recall by the Burlington Basket company.   The company made them before June of last year.

"As an expecting mother, its nerve-racking to know what you can and cannot buy," remarked Nalisha Hood.  The Consumer Product Safety Commission says the problem is with the cross bracing rails on the legs.  If they are not fully locked into place, the bassinet can collapse causing a baby to fall to the floor.

The recall comes on the heels of 10 reported incidents that the bassinet collapsed. Two infants received minor injuries as a result of the collapses.

If you own one of these bassinets, check the rails to make sure they are locked into place. The Iowa-based company is not offering to take back the bassinets.  You can call 1-800-533-2300 to get a free repair kit.
