Ga. deputy killed in boating accident

AUGUSTA, Ga. (AP) - A Burke County sheriff's deputy was killed in a boating accident on the Savannah River.

Sheriff Greg Coursey said 60-year-old Mike Johnson was headed down the river Saturday when he struck a log and was thrown from the boat. The sheriff said witnesses dragged Johnson to the bank and attempted resuscitation.

Coursey said preliminary tests indicate that Johnson suffered from a heart attack.

Johnson was a bailiff with the sheriff's office and a retired Waynesboro police sergeant.
