New drug to be declared illegal in Alabama

MONTGOMERY, AL (WBRC) - Another street drug will become illegal this week in Alabama.

On Tuesday, Alabama Attorney General Luther Strange and the state's top doctor will announce the state is banning the possession, manufacturing and distribution of bath salts.

These bath salts are synthetic stimulants sold in quarter-sized plastic containers -- some claiming to "energize your mind, body and soul."

They are not actually bath salts, but look like cocaine and can have a similar effect.

When inhaled or ingested, these synthetic materials can cause hallucinations and psychotic episodes -- causing individuals to end up in the emergency room.

For more information on these synthetic drugs check out this special report, "Drugs in Disguise".
